The 16 personality types, explained

Take the test at whichever depth you have time for — 12, 32 or 60 questions — and get your four-letter type with the cognitive functions underneath it. The type descriptions come from the people who built the framework, not from an internet summary of it. You can save and come back to the longer versions.

Where this comes from

How it works

  1. Choose 12, 32 or 60 questions.
  2. Answer honestly about how you are, not how you would like to be.
  3. Read your type, its functions, and where it tends to strain.

Common questions

How long does the test take?

The 12-question version takes about two minutes, 32 questions about five, and 60 questions about ten. The longer versions separate close preferences more reliably.

Is the MBTI test free?

Yes, all three depths, and you can retake it.

Can my type change?

The framework treats type as stable and your expression of it as changing with age and circumstance. If your result moves, it is usually because a preference was close to the middle to begin with.

What are cognitive functions?

The four letters are a shorthand. Underneath sit eight functions — how you take in information and how you decide — stacked in an order that differs by type. That stack is where the detail lives.
